Glossary

Bracket

An orthodontic attachment that is secured to a tooth (either by bonding or banding) for the purpose of engaging an archwire. Brackets can be fabricated from metal, ceramic or plastic.

Bands (orthodontic)

A thin metal ring, usually stainless steel, which serves to secure orthodontic attachments to a tooth. The band, with orthodontic attachments welded or soldered to it, is closely adapted to fit the contours of the tooth and then cemented into place.

Archwire

A wire engaged in orthodontic attachments, affixed to the crowns of two or more teeth and capable of causing or guiding tooth movement.

Elastics

Also known as rubber bands, elastics are used to move teeth in a prescribed direction in order to idealize the bite.

Separators

Elastic rings that are placed between the teeth to make room for the placement of bands.

Power Chain

Interconnected Elastic rings used to close gaps between teeth.

Wax

Wax can be placed on a wire or brackets to relieve discomfort.

RPE (Rapid Palatal Expander)

An orthodontic device used to create a wider space in the upper jaw.

Nance Appliance

Used to hold the upper back teeth in place during a specific phase of orthodontic treatment.

Lower Lingual Arch

An appliance used to hold the molars in place. Used in cases were baby teeth are lost too soon or to correct slight crowding.

Herbst appliance

Fixed appliance designed to correct overbite problems.

Habit appliance

An appliance used to help stop thumb/finger sucking and tongue thrusting habits which can adversely affect the teeth and jaws.
